10 Questions with The Red Rocket

Name:  Rob Hadley

Grade: B

1. Average K's per week: 150 to 200k, Just cracked 200 for 3 weeks in a row. I do 500k per week in Holland every year.

2. Favourite Training Ride: Locally, Tuesday morning efforts with Brett Hadley, Craig Rosevear, Craig Bartel, Colin Cole, Rod Milford and anyone else who is game. But my favourite is the group ride in Harderwijk, Holland 3 times weekly - 40 odd guys go sick for 50k on beautiful quiet roads through the woods.

3. How long racing: Racing for 39 years. I have lost more races than anyone I know!

4. Current Bike: Giant TCR Advanced LE

5. Hardest Won Race: NSW Junior Road Championship. Won, got disqualified, appealed and won the appeal 5 hours later, or maybe my first World Masters crit championship. I beat Alan Van Heerden who was still a full time pro and had won a stage of the Giro d'Italia.

6.Bike Riding Hero: Several Heroes. Locally - Col Appleyard. I've seen him perform incredibly in his early fifties and now in his late seventies is still the driver in his grade.

Worldwide, Sean Kelly, Laurent Jalabert.

7.Future Cycling Goals:  Keep on enjoying the health aspect at a comfortable level. I know how much work it takes to be at a high level and I don't have the physical or mental endurance any more. My main motivation is the enjoyment of passing on my skills to new riders.

8. Armstrong or Ullrich:  Ullrich; I spent time watching him when I worked on the Commonwealth Bank Race, then spent time with him at Tour of Hawaii where he displayed awesome power for a German win. He takes it to Armstrong every day, gets knocked down, and jumps up again, knowing that everyone has a bad day sometimes. Lesser men give up too easy.

9. What pisses you off in the bunch:  Guys who watch the back wheel in front of them, get in to trouble and have no idea what's going on around and in front of them. Oh, and also inexperienced riders who look around behind them all the time. Better off to see where you are going, not where you have been!

10. Words of wisdom:

Learn the basics, eat sensibly, hydrate, and remember it's 99% mental! If you're hurting, so is the other guy. Hurt him more!
And a tip for winning. This is a secret. When the pedal comes up to the top, push it back down; You can't lose!
And; Keep the rubber side down.
