June 2006

Hi Craig

A good result to post

The HDCC U17 team took out GOLD in the NSW Teams Time Trial in Tamworth last weekend.
The team of Peter Lewis, Olsen Garland, Jordan Fawkes and Riley Sulivan won the event
raced over 2 laps of a 10 km undulating and twisting course in cold and wet conditions.
The boys rode a powerful second lap to win comfortably, clocking just over 30 min for the 20 km.

Cheers
Brett Fawkes

Cheers, Bill Cox

Muswellbrook Junior 2 day tour

U17 age division

Date:                 8th -9th April

4 stage tour  consisting of  11km time trial, 40km road race, 25km road race and a 50km road race

Venue              Muswellbrook

Tour Results:     Olsen Garland  2nd,  Jordan Fawkes  4th

Report:             Both Olsen and Jordan were severely disadvantaged when the time trial was abandoned due to a mob of cows wandering onto the course (in contravention to the traffic management plan) .

Olsen had ridden the fastest time trial and Jordan the second fastest . Had the results of the time trial not been excluded both HDCC boys would most likely have improved their overall results.

Despite this set back both boys raced aggressively in the 3 road stages but were unable to shake the eventual winner who was far too strong in the sprint finishes.

It was also good to see a contingent of Kooragang juniors at this event with Ben Johnson 6th overall in the 17's and Stephen Lewis 1st U13.

Kooragang Junior Open Road Race; 64km

U17 age division

Date:                23rd April, 2006

Venue: Kooragang (Newcastle)

Race Results:    Olsen Garland 4th,  Riley Sullivan 5th

Report:              A memorable feature of this race was the break made by Jordan Fawkes in the second of eight laps, the gap stretched out to almost a minute at one stage but he was eventually reeled in.

With Jordan exhausted and now lead out man it was left up to Riley and Olsen to wave the Hunter District Flag in the bunch gallop at the finish.

Fearnes Coaches Gwen French Memorial Junior 2 day Tour

U17 age division

4 stage tour  consisting of  50klm road race, criterium, 62klm road race and a 10klm time trial

Date:                6th – 7th May, 2006

Venue:              Wagga Wagga

Tour Results:  GC -   U17A  Olsen Garland 3rd   Jordan Fawkes 4th

Reprort:          A total of 30 riders entered the Wagga tour in the U/17 age division.

The 20 man "A grade" field boasted a quality line up with all the big hitters from NSW, ACT and Victoria in attendance.

After bunch finishes in the first three stages but no time bonuses the Hunter District boys were equal 6th on GC with 4 or 5 other riders and would have to pull out a solid time trial if they were to end up in the money (top 5).

Saving their best to  last with Olsen wearing his super fast hot pink booties, the boys hammered out in the wet and windy conditions on a dead and undulating 10km course.

Olsen returned the second fastest time of the day with Jordan close behind at 5th fastest.(both boys averaging 38km/h +) their times good enough to place them 3rd & 4th overall.

As the winner of the time trial was from the ACT, Olsen was the fastest NSW rider and Jordan the 3rd fastest New South Welshmen.

Upcoming Junior Events:

20th May - NSW Crit Championships

21st May - Country Road Championships

10th & 11th June - Tamworth 2 day Tour (NSW Team TT championships)

Grafton-Inverell 17th Sept. 228km Started B Grade and finished second.
Approx 150 starters left, in b,c & d grades combined, Grafton at about
7:30am. Headed west out of the town into the worst wind locals have seen
years, mainly head or cross wind. With the Gibraltar climb looming hiding in
the pack was the way to go. After negotiating the crazy 1st feed zone we
started climbing. About 50min later the lead group was down to about 15. On
the way to Glenn Inness this climbed to about 20 and everyone in the group
wanted to avoid the front. After Glenn Inness the end was getting nearer.
With approx. 25km to go I was still feeling OK so I started to attack at
every chance I got. With about 13km to go I finally got away and one rider
came across the gap and so we worked very hard to stay away. The last 5km is
down hill and with 1km to go my breakaway partner stopped working. But with
3 people chasing not for behind I didn't sit up untill about 400m out. I
tried in vane to get him off my tail but he launched his sprint with 150m to
go and I couldn't get his wheel or get back over him and so I got 2nd in a
2up sprint (as usual). Still very happy. Big thanks  to Paul, John (and his
Nanna), and Brendan who feed us along the way. After the race it was beer
o'clock.

Well another Grafton over and what a race this time, from the start all the way to the finish a full on head wind.  The winning time for b,c & d was 8 hours 20 something (they cocked up the results so have not released the official finishing times).  I finished in 8 hours 24, within sight of the front group.

Race started at 7.30am, very cold and wind blowing at up to 60kph (with gusts over 80kph).  Stayed together (150 riders)until the Gibralter Range, a group of 40 of us led the way up the climb.  after about 6 km I hit a bad patch and lost contact, after another km I started to find a rythm and slowly but surely started to pull back the bunch, a group of 15 riders split just as I got back on at around the 14km mark on the climb.  I then led the group of 25 riders all the way to the top.

The leading riders had a minute on us but my bunch just would not work, everybody wanted to be a hero but no-one wanted to roll through, after 10kms the gap had grown to over 5mins with a large group chasing at 2 mins behind.  At the 130 km, with approx 98km to go I made a break with another rider up one of the small climbs, another rider came across and very soon we had a break of around 1:30, we continued on through Glenn Innes (68km to go) when one of my fellow escapees hit the wall, luckily for us a team-mate of the other rider with me had made the break and had been chasing us for around 10km so we lost one but gained one (only this one had a bit more petrol in the tank).  Time checks to the leading group were coming down with every pedal stroke, 4 mins, 3mins 30, 2 mins then 1min 30, could we do it we could see them up ahead but we were pretty shot and then another 3 riders caught us.  So up ahead, 1 D grader, 3 C graders and 9 B graders, my group, 5 C graders and 1 B grader.  The three riders who caught us attacked the crap out of us but we hung on, one rider broke away, cought the leaders and finished 2nd!!  We ran out of ks and sprinted in around a minute behind, I just did not have any legs left and sprinted in to take 8 in C grade (if they had ran a Masters 45yrs and over, like the last 4 years I would have creamed it in!!)

Anyway I finished, my fingers were so numb that I could not change gear, the wind chill had been as low as minus 10, my knee was sore (pain started the week before but figured I had trained a long time for this one so why not see how it went, paying the price now though!) but I had ridden and completed my 19 Grafton with my best result against the young guys for a few years (my previous two rides had been in the Masters category 3rd & 4th), might do another one but will have to train just a bit harder if I want to win it!

(A classic example of Hunter District Team Spirit). secretary

Well I`ll try not to brag to much.
Stage 1 60k Saturday morn. A few attacks but bunch stayed together,
till about 12k to go I attacked up a long rise and Owen Beltan from Manning
valley came alone. Swapped turns for 10k till Owen dropped off and I soloed
it to the end to get a 7sec time gap and 15sec win bonus. Paul blocked like
a champion so I stayed away
Stage 2 80k Saturday arvo. 4 man break up the road from about 30k
mark, bunch wasn't chasing well, so I attacked up a difficult climb and 2
others came with me, Graham Pont from Central Coast and Chris Tory from Port
Macq. We bridged the gap of about 35sec with 30k still to go. So 7 up break,
got lead up to 1min 10sec with 15k to go, but break down to 5 workers 1
dropped and 1 hanger. Gap came down and down despite Big Pauls best efforts
to delay the bunch - much to many Sydney riders disgust, they hate us now.
1k to go gap down to 25sec legs were so spent couldn't stand to sprint but
held on to 3rd (surprised?) Graham Pont 1st on stage and we all gained 20sec
on main bunch.
Stage 3 120k Sunday morn. I'm 1st on GC 13sec to Chris Tory 16sec to
Graham Pont, these were the men to watch. Geoff Troup (Koor) attacks after
10k takes KOM and finally gets caught after 70k. Then all the attacks start.
But my super domestique Paul kept it under control. With 15k to go bunch
stretched out Graham Pont and I put the pressure on and the bunch splits in
two. To keep attacks from going away we roll turns or try to block the road
and have a rest. 700m out someone attacks someone responds, 600m same again,
450m same again. Legs are burning heart feels like its going to explode.
Then Chris Tory attacks and I had to cover him, when he sits up Owen Beltan
from Manning valley attacks and I could hold his wheel but hang on to claim,
you guessed it, 3rd!
Final results I held on to get a 26sec win over Chris then Graham in
3rd. Couldn't have done it without Paul.

Brian also Had the following excellent result..............

A win in C-Grade at the Rosemount Estate Open.
55km race got in a 4 man break after about 15k held off pack till 5k
to go when 6 riders got across. A few sharp attacks happened and were
covered. At about 1k to go there was 2 Sydney Cycling Club riders on the
front and me 3rd wheel. At 600m to go with a huge tail wind the front rider
took off and the 2nd rider let the wheel go. There was no response from
anyone else so I jumped around the lazy rider and made the gap with about
250m to go, where I sat up for a brief rest then sprinted around to claim
another victory for HD. Made for a good weekend and the sponsors wine prize
was very good!

Posted 31st July 2005 from Ian Lovell

Once again HDCC do the club proud!!!   (yours truly) Ian Lovell, John Theaker & Steve Darracott made the 7 hour (only 6 for big Steve) trip to Wagga on the weekend for the masters State Titles.  The time trial saw John & myself end up with 4th & 5th respectively, great result from John and not too far off the pace.

Sundays road racing started off with big Steve defending his title in the Masters 4, 75km on a fairly flat course with three loops around a 17km circuit with a short climb about 750m long.  The climb was not long or steep enough to break up the bunch too much and each time the riders were able to form back up into a large bunch on the downhill.  A large group came up for the sprint with Steve taking the honours in a very hard fought contest.

Masters 5 saw John & yours truly fronting up in a small group of 14.  The pace started off very gingerly (hey snails move faster!) so I cranked it up and made at least some effort to make it look as though we were racing. Just one rider made a point of closing any break I made down and kept dragging the whole bunch along instead of coming across on his own.  After 15/20km of this Mark Walters from Southern Highlands rolled off the front, I waved goodbye and everyone just sat there looking around.  John Theaker took the initiative and sprinted across.

Well 50km to go and the race for Gold was more or less over.  The bunch just wouldn't work together and they just worried more about watching me rather than chasing after the bunch (as if I'm a real threat!).   On the short climb I cranked it up each time and made the chase group smaller each lap but I made no effort to chase down the break.  Finally on the last lap the remaining 5 riders started to swap off turns, the gap started to come down very quickly, in the last 10 km only 2 riders worked which enabled the break to stay away, the other 3 only wanted to sprint for the bronze or try to take me out, as it happened the break which had a lead of 2mins 30 at one stage finished 50 metres in front of yours truly who won the sprint from 500m out and sprinted at 54kph uphill (hey I downloaded the heart rate monitor and thats what it said!).  So John took the silver and I took the bronze.

Could have been a better result but there was no way I was going to chase John down, he deserved his medal, so at the end of the day HDCC picked up a full set (Gold, Silver & Bronze) with Pete Staley from HVVCC taking gold in the Masters 6 division.

Regards Ian

The team time trial - Gunning 24th July 2005

9 hours driving for the round trip, and only 3 riders (after Kenny
Johnston decided to try and head butt a grass bank at Minmi on Saturday)
and we still pulled it off!  Yep once again the Masters  50+ brought
home the gold!  Brian and John did their bit and hung on for dear life
while I did a large slice of the work.  To their credit they didn't drop
off and dug deep on the climbs.  And boy were there climbs!!  The course
started with a fast 2 km downhill with a tail wind, then it was hill
after hill after hill.  Coming back was tough, into the headwind and
back up those never ending hills.

The "young" vets led by big Steve struggled to find a rythym, Greg
White was dropped and Chappie, well Chappie and hills just don't mix,
and at the end of the day they only just beat us oldies by 3 secs.  The
Penrith Boys led by Eddie Salas creamed the Masters 34 - 49 division
with an excellent time of 30min +.

Conditions for the race were less than ideal but probably played into
our hands as it was not a course for the Sydney-Siders who
ride day-in, day-out on flat circuits!  The proof of the pudding is in
the eating and our Minmi racing certainly is some of the hardest club
racing out there.

regards Ian

       U/15 A Grade Jordan Fawkes - 1st.

The Waratah Vets Open at Eastern Creek.

The first round was a few weeks ago. Steve Darracott won that one with Bill Cox 4th.

On Sundays format, they had a scratch race then a handicap whereby the marks were determined by the results of the previous two scratch races.

In the scratch, Bill Cox was in a 2 man break with David Wells and ran 2nd, Steve led Brian Radcliffe out and he rolled him on the line to run 3rd with Steve 4th. Steve then made the final. Apparently, all the contestants in the 1 lap final got a pair of Shimano WH 600 wheels.

Steve won the series.

Hunter District Cyclists Score Hat Trick

Over 300 of the best Australian Masters cyclists descended on the Victorian town of Lancefield to contest the 2005 'Lancefield Hotel' Australian Masters Road Championships, held from Sunday 20 – Tuesday 22 March 2005.

Conditions were described as tough and windy with only a small proportion of starters actually finishing due to the harsh racing conditions.

Newcastle was well represented with a hat trick from Hunter District cyclists.

The “hardman” of local cycling  Steve Darracott took out first place in both the men’s masters 4 road race and criterium. Darracott was also awarded the prestigious “Cyclists of the Meet” award.

Popular local Rob Hadley cemented his well respected role in national cycling securing 2nd place in the men’s masters 5 road race as well as solid finish in the masters 5 criterium.

The tenacious Ian Lovell secured 3rd place in the men’s masters 5 criterium.

Other local riders to successfully compete included Billy Cox, Brian Radcliffe, Ross Hayter and Matt Ryan.

In related news Hunter District Cyclist Bruce Masson scored a silver medal at  the recent Masters Track titles division 4 (45 to 50 age group) 500M time trial. His time of 36.94 was a personal best. Brian Radcliffe received a bronze medal.
